The Danish Institute for International Studies started operations in 2003. The institute took over the activities of Danish Institute of International Affairs (DIIS); Centre for Development Research (CDR); Copenhagen Peace Research Institute (COPRI); and Danish Centre for Holocaust and Genocide Studies (DCHF).
Together with the Institute for Human Rights, the Danish Institute for International Studies forms the Danish Centre for International Studies and Human Rights.
Former Minister for Foreign Affairs Uffe Ellemann Jensen is Chairman of the Board of the Centre. Chairman of the Board of the Danish Institute for International Studies is Professor, Dr. Georg Sørensen, Department of Political Science, Aarhus University. Director of the Danish Institute for International Studies is ambassador Per Carlsen.
The Danish Institute for International Studies plans to move to new premises in the second half of 2003. Until further notice, the constituent units will retain their present coordinates.
In June 2000, DIIS, the predecessor of the Danish Institute for International Studies, accepted a request from the Government to produce a report on Denmark's security policy situation during the Cold War. In 2002 the mandate for this report was broadened by the new government. Henceforth it should not only shed light on the security policy strategy and the military threat from the Soviet Union and the other Warsaw Pact countries against Denmark and the rest of Western Europe, but also include an overview of the official Danish security policy and the security policy debate with particular attention on the period leading up to the end of the Cold War. Warsaw Pact countries' attempts, directly or indirectly, to influence (including through Danish political parties and organisations etc.) the formulation of policy in the foreign and security policy area will be, in this connection, of particular interest. The resulting White Paper will be finalised at the end of 2004.
In 1997 DIIS published a major contribution to cold war history, the two volume "Greenland During the Cold War".
