Partner: Institute for Strategy and Security Politics at the Austrian Defence Academy, Vienna
The Institute of Military Studies (Militärwissenschaftliches Büro) in Vienna was founded in 1997 as a research center for international security policy, peace and conflict studies as well as international legal, economic and cultural relations. In 2001, the Institute's research unit was reorganized and became the Department of Contemporary History at the Austrian National Defence Academy's Institute for Strategy and Security Politics (Institut für Strategie und Sicherheitspolitik - Fachbereich Zeitgeschichte).
The Institute's major areas of research are the Cold War and international peace operations, with a special attention to the role of Austria. Its publications, including the annual Jahrbuch für Internationale Sicherheitspolitik, are particularly concerned with regional security in Eastern Europe and developments in the Balkans. The Institute organizes conferences, workshops, and seminars for both specialists and the wider public. It collaborates with related institutions around the world.
