Associate: Institute of Contemporary History, Munich/Berlin

The Institute of Contemporary History (Institut für Zeitgeschichte), founded in 1949 and located in Munich, is a national research institution having the legal status of a publicly endowed foundation. Until the 1970s, the Institute's research dealt primarily with the periods of the National Socialist dictatorship and post-World War II Allied occupation; since then, the history of the Federal Republic of Germany and former East Germany have been added.

The research was intensified with the opening of two branches of the Institute, initially in Bonn and Potsdam, now both in Berlin. The first, established in 1990, focuses on West German foreign policy and edits the Documents on Foreign Policy of the Federal Republic of Germany. The second, established in 1994, continues research initiated as early as 1980 on former East Germany and Soviet policy in central Europe. Since 1953, the IfZ has been publishing the quarterly Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte.
