Associate: Federal Military Archives, Freiburg
In 1955 the Federal Military Archives ("Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv") was founded as a department of the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz. The institution is responsible for the archives of the "Prussian Army" since 1867, the "Norddeutsche und Kaiserliche Marine", the "Reichswehr", the "Wehrmacht", the "Waffen-SS", the "Bundeswehr", and since 1990, for the archives of the "Nationale Volksarmee". Important collections are also personal files prior to 1945, private papers, collections concerning military history, soldiers' and veterans' organizations, associations of military sciences, maps, drawings, official prints, pictures, and microfilms.
The Archives' most important finding aids are accessible on its website. Publications of the Bundesarchiv-Militärarchiv appear in the series Schriften des Bundesarchivs, and Findbücher zu den Beständen des Bundesarchivs.
