Associate: Cold War International History Project, Washington

In 1991, senior American scholars of the Cold War established the CWIHP at the Woodrow Wilson Center, making use of its unique proximity to archives and its access to both the Washington policy community and the world of scholarship. The impetus behind the Project was the opportunity to take advantage of archival openings in the former Soviet bloc in order to promote a new wave of historiography on the Cold War based on sources from "the other side."

CWIHP's activities include the publication of the Bulletin (described by The New York Times as "the best single source" for new Cold War evidence), periodic working papers and books, and the "Electronic Bulletin" on the World Wide Web. CWIHP has organized four major scholarly conferences and more than 20 focused workshops and seminars, and has sponsored direct Fellowships for study in the United States by younger scholars from former East Bloc countries.
