||
Description:
This document gives an account of a conversation on international affairs between Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and visiting Soviet First Deputy Premier Anastas I. Mikoyan. The main topic of the conversation is the creation of pro-Western alliances (Baghdad Pact and SEATO) in Asia and their effects on regional security. Both Nehru and Mikoyan condemn these pacts and interpret them as negatively affecting the security of both the Soviet Union, India and Afghanistan. Nehru reports of previous discussions with Selwyn Lloyd and John Foster Dulles about the regional repercussions of these new alliance systems. Other topics mentioned are the internal situation in Iran, the war in Algeria, the situation in Indochina, Goa and general questions of disarmament. Mikoyan and Nehru both notice a general consensus of Soviet and Indian views on most of these issues. Collection: The View from India
