Troop Levels and Main Armaments of Warsaw Pact and NATO Forces in Europe and Adjoining Maritime Areas

17 Dec 1988
Description: This is the summary of a report by the Supreme Commander of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) United Armed Forces, Viktor Kulikov, on the publication of statistical details outlining the respective troops levels and capabilities of the WP and NATO. The report is delivered during the 23rd session of the WP Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Sofia in 1988. Since NATO has published its assessment of the respective military assets of NATO and the WP, Kulikov proposes that the WP follow suit with its own version of these numbers. In his judgment, NATO's assessment is flawed, reflecting as it does the West's erroneous belief in a nonexistent supremacy of the WP.
