||
Description:
This report by the GDR Embassy in Moscow briefly examines the situation in India after the Lok Sabha elections of 1980 and the expected development of India's foreign relations after the return to power by Indira Gandhi.
The authors of the report welcome the sweeping election victory of the Indian National Congress (I) as beneficial to the interests of the Soviet Union and its allies. The report foresees a strong government dominated by the personal charisma of Indira Gandhi and a return to the close relations with the Soviet Union. Aside from the ideological agreements of both sides, there are also strong structural reasons in favor of cooperation. Strengthened ties between China and the U.S. together with increasing geopolitical ambitions of the latter in the wider Indian Ocean region necessitate for India to orientate towards Moscow.
The report predicts a return to a more pronounced Indian role in the Non-Aligned movement as well as stronger engagement in Southeast Asia, countering Chinese advances.
