US Report to NATO on Assessment of US Forces Mission in NATO Framework

Description: This document presents reports from the US to NATO assessing the development of US forces assigned to NATO. It was prepared by the East German Stasi (Staatssicherheit) intelligence agency. The paper presents the forces assigned to NATO by the US army, the air force, and the navy respectively, an evaluation of the measures taken in 1981, plans for the period 1982-1986, and an assessment of combat readiness. The US gives high priority to NATO in its military policy and plans to maintain forces strong enough to have an effective military policy within the framework of the credible deterrence strategy. The annex contains two evaluations of the US forces' fighting power.
