Report on the Visit by the East German First Secretary (Erich Honecker) to India

Description: This document is a comprehensive description of the official visit of the East German General Secretary Erich Honecker to India in January 1979. The report stresses the friendly and intimate character of the visit which is regarded as an overall success. It describes the content of Honecker's conversations with Prime Minister Morarji Desai, President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and other Indian officials and party leaders.One of the main achievements of the visit is the conclusion of an agreement on economic and scientific cooperation. Attached to the main document is the transcript of conversation with the Prime Minister. During the talk with the Indian Prime Minister, a number of international questions such as detente with the West, disarmament, South Africa and the Middle East are discussed. Desai describes a number of recent measures by India to build confidence amongst other Asian states.
