Records of the PCC Meeting in Bucharest: Recollections of East German Defense Minister (Heinz Kessler)

7 Jul 1989
Description: This is an excerpt from a book by former East German minister of defense Heinz Kessler relating his recollections of the Cold War. The fragment addresses the July 1989 meeting of the Warsaw Pact (WP) Political Consultative Committee (PCC) in Bucharest. According to Kessler, the PCC members avoided sensitive discussion topics, such as the elections in Poland. Erich Honecker, the general secretary of the East German Socialist Unity Party (SED), had intended to raise these issues at the meeting of the WP party leaders, but was unable to attend this meeting due to health problems.
