||
Description:
This document records the discussions in the Politburo of the Romanian Workers' Party in the aftermath of the mediation visit to Beijing. The discussions between First Secretary Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej and his comrades reflect the growing rift between Romania and the Soviet Union. Gheorghiu-Dej faults Soviet rigidity for the failure of the mediation effort.
Commenting on the Chinese position in world politics, the First Secretary describes the possible Chinese attainment of nuclear weapons as the central problem. He also reflects on the Sino-Indian border dispute, defending the Chinese position as a reaction to aggressive Indian moves and attitudes. He reports of Chinese complaints about the biased attitude of the Indian CP and their prediction of the imminent ouster of Shripat Amrit Dange as chairman of the party.
