Letter from Head of the Security Department of the CC of the SED (Walter Borning) to Secretary General of the SED (Walter Ulbricht)22 Feb 1961 |
||
Description:
This letter refers to a series of student demonstrations organized
by the East German Staatssicherheit (Stasi) domestic intelligence agency that took place in Potsdam in February 1961, after the murder of former Congolese prime minister Patrice Lumumba. The demonstration was directed against the buildings of the US, French, and British Military Liaison Missions (MLM). In one incident, 150 students entered the site of the US Military Mission. The MLM appear to have been informed in advance about the proceeding of the demonstration, but the Stasi officers are unaware as to the source of their information. The document discusses a breakdown of communication between the regional Stasi offices on this occasion.
