Interview with Gen. Ing. Ján Franko

Description: This is a transcript of an interview with Czechoslovak General Ján Franko (b. 1925), chief of the Chemical Warfare Troops in Czechoslovakia (1968-1981). It provides information on his career in the Czechoslovak armed forces. General Franko discusses military structures, troop training, and deployment in Czechoslovakia. He comments on the operational planning in the 1960s and 1970s, stressing the option of chemical and nuclear warfare in Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Bloc. He points out that the effects of nuclear weapons, and especially of neutron weapons, were severely underestimated. Additionally, he highlights aspects of the relationship between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union before and after the Soviet invasion in 1968 and of the deployment of Soviet forces in Czechoslovakia.
