On the Announcement of Force Levels and Main Armament Types of the Warsaw Pact and NATO in Europe and Adjoining Maritime Areas (Summary)

17 Oct 1988
Description: This is the summary of a report by Soviet Defense Minister Dmitri Iazov on the preparation and publication of statistical information on the strength and composition of both alliances' armed forces in Europe. The report is delivered during the 22nd summit of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Prague 1988 against the background of talks on reducing conventional forces in Europe. Iazov outlines why it is seen as advantageous to publish statistics on the WP's armed forces, how these details have been compiled, and why, due to changed circumstances, a unilateral publication is no longer favorable.
