State and Improvements of the Warsaw Pact Countries' Routes and Means of Transportation (Theses)

9 Feb 1972
Description: This summary presents key elements of a report on the state of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) transportation system and measures for improving it. The report was presented by Anatoli Mereshko, who served with the United Armed Forces staff during the fourth session of the WP Committee of Defense Ministers in East Berlin 1972. The author is upbeat regarding transportation issues in the Warsaw Pact. Nevertheless, a number of bottlenecks exist, such as the variation in the railroad track gages used in the Soviet Union and in the allied countires to its West, respectively. In conclusion, the report notes that more coordination and integration is necessary in this area.
