Report by Defense Minister Heinz Hoffmann to the SED Politburo on NATO Forces and the Fourth Session of the CDM

Feb 1972
Description: This is a report by East German Defense Minister Heinz Hoffmann to the politburo of the United Socialist Party's (SED) Central Committee. It deals with NATO's armed forces in Europe and outlines the results of the fourth session of the Warsaw Pact (WP) Committee of Defense Ministers (CDM) in East Berlin 1972. Despite the relaxation of tensions between East and West, Hoffmann stresses the importance of a high level of defense readiness and underlines the aggressive nature of NATO. In the field of transportation, more standardization and coordination is necessary. Romania and Hungary refuse to sign an integrated air defense plan.
