Report by East German Defense Minister Heinz Hoffmann on NATO's "Fallex 68 / Golden Rod" Exercise

21 Nov 1968
Description: This document is a report by East German Minister of Defense Heinz Hoffmann on NATO's "Fallex 68" exercise. The report outlines the military and political purpose of the exercise. During the exercise, NATO's armed forces prepared for covert, limited, and nuclear war and practiced the use of nuclear weapons. Hoffmann also makes some remarks on the high state of combat-readiness of the West German army. He concludes that the "Fallex 68" exercise is evidence of NATO's offensive military strategy and that the East German army should further enhance its capabilities in response.
