Report on a Visit of a GDR Military Delegation to the Soviet Union in June 1979

Description: In this report, Lieutenant General Fritz Streletz provides information on a visit of a East German military delegation under Defense Minister Heinz Hoffmann to the Soviet Union in June 1979. The deleagtion visited among others a division of fighter pilots, a regiment of flak rockets, and the Black Sea Fleet. In meetings with Soviet Defense Minister Dmitryi Ustinov, the economic and political situation in the Soviet Union and the GDR and the negotiations on the Strategic Arms Limitation Treaties (SALT II) were discussed. When Ustinov asked that the National People’s Army (NVA) increase ist arms production and defense research capabilities in 1981-85, Hoffmann alluded to East German economic difficulties.
