Future Tasks of the Alliance - Sub-Group 3 - Comments by the NATO Secretary General (Manlio Brosio) (FDP(67)20)

12 May 1967
Description: In this document, the secretary general expresses his personal views on the nature of the study and the report to be prepared by Sub-Group 3 on the future tasks of the alliance. He states that the study should be forward-looking and concise and suggests omitting a review of past NATO defense policy in favor of a discussion on deterrence in the mid-1960s. Further, he feels that the chief purpose of the report should be to demonstrate the role that NATO's military force posture and structure can play both in ensuring the security of member countries and in furthering the political objectives of the alliance.
