Description: This summary presents the key elements of a report by Soviet Minister of Defense Dmitri Iazov on the consequences of the newly-adopted defensive military doctrine of the Warsaw Pact (WP). Iazov gives this report during the 20th session of the WP Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Bucharest in 1987. He stresses the necessity of maintaining sufficiently large and well-equipped armed forces, and of keeping pace with the West in technological terms. The nature of defensive warfare is discussed and crucial points for success are highlighted.
