The Šumava Exercise: Report by Gen. Fritz Streletz to the East German Defense Council

5 Jul 1968
Description: This report by East German General Fritz Streletz to the East German Defense Council discusses the Warsaw Pact command staff exercise "Šumava". Streletz informs the council that the Czechoslovak and Hungarian troops withdrew after the final assessment of the exercise, without the permission of the military command. The report also summarizes a meeting between Supreme Commander of the United Armed Forces Ivan Yakubovsky and Czechoslovak Defense Minister Martin Dzúr. Streletz concludes by providing information on his conversation with Czechoslovak Major-General Blahout, who argues that there is no reason for defaming the process of democratization in Czechoslovakia as counterrevolutionary agitation.
