Report on Talks Between the East German Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (Klaus Willerding) with the Indian Foreign Ministry1 Sep 1977 |
||
Description:
This document reports on the talks of the visiting East German Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs with the Indian Foreign Ministry in August 1977. During the consultations, the Indian side reaffirmed its intention to continue the general foreign policy orientation of previous governments. The East German Deputy Minister, however, noticed a stronger usage of nationalist positions by the new leadership. Attempts by the Janata government to accommodate Washington and to seek better relations with Beijing have not met a serious response yet. The East German side expects a stronger influence of the Indian bourgeoisie on foreign policy positions for the future which would lead to closer relations with capitalist countries and a downgrading of previously close cooperation with the Socialist Bloc.
With respect to the GDR, the new government hopes for an intensification of trade relations and collaboration, including the military sphere.
