Report on the Visit of the Indian Prime Minister (Rajiv Gandhi) to the Soviet Union (1985)

4 Jun 1985
Description: This document reports on the visit by Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to the Soviet Union in May 1985. Rajiv Gandhi confirms the intention of the new Indian leadership to continue its close relationship with the Socialist countries. The talks cover Soviet-Chinese relations and the situation in Afghanistan. Rajiv Gandhi criticizes US policies in Europe, Pakistan and the wider Indian Ocean. He also claims that the US supports the Pakistani nuclear programme. The Soviet observers are concerned about the technocratic nature of Gandhi’s cabinet and suspects that some of his ministers prefer an equidistant position vis-à-vis the superpowers.
