conducted by Karel Sieber, 11 November 2003

11 Nov 2003
Description: This is a transcript of an interview with Czechoslovak General Karel Pezl (b. 1927), chief of the Operation Preparations Department of the Operations Directorate in the 1960s. General Pezl describes Czechoslovak attempts to circumvent the demands imposed upon the first-echelon Czechoslovak Front by the Soviet General Staff, as well as to achieve a more equal position within the Warsaw Pact. He outlines operational planning structures within the Warsaw Pact and the basic structures and mechanisms for Czechoslovak military planning. General Pezl further confirms the deployment of nuclear weapons on Czechoslovak territory after 1965 and the existence of a plan to flood parts of Czechoslovakia. Finally, he outlines the changes in the Czechoslovak armed forces after 1989.
