Telex from the East German Ambassador to Romania (Bock) of 14 October 1983

14 Oct 1983
Description: This telex from the East German ambassador to Romania Bock provides information on the Romanian position regarding NATO's plans to station intermediate-range nuclear weapons in Western Europe. This message was sent a few days before the extraordinary meeting of the Warsaw Pact (WP) Committee of Ministers of Defense in East Berlin in 1983. According to the Romanian assessment, the US will not deploy new missiles, and therefore any discussions about Soviet countermeasures are premature. The document also addresses the conditions under which Romania wishes to remain a member of the WP.
