Speech by the Soviet Foreign Minister (Andrei A. Gromyko)

23 Apr 1978
Description: This is the transcript of a speech given by Gromyko at the 1978 meeting of the Warsaw Pact's Committee of Ministers of Foreign Affairs (CMFA) in Sofia. The focus of the speech is on disarmament. He underlines that all Warsaw Pact states are in favor of prohibiting weapons of mass destruction, and urges concrete steps to achieve that goal. He also points to the importance of further negotiations on the ban of neutron weapons, despite US resistance. He then stresses the priority of negotiations with the US on tactical nuclear weapons. At the end of his speech, he offers an assessment of the European détente process.
