Statement of the Soviet Union (NATO's Plans to Deploy Euromissiles)

20 Oct 1983
Description: This statement by Soviet Defense Minister Dmitri Ustinov addresses NATO's plans for deployment of missiles in Europe ("Euromissiles"). Ustinov introduced this statement during an extraordinary session of the Warsaw Pact Committee of Defense Ministers in East Berlin in 1983. He argues that the US and its NATO allies are disturbing the achieved balance of power by further developing nuclear weapons. The US is accelerating the arms race with the goal of outpacing the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union is prepared to respond in case NATO should deploy more missiles in Western Europe by stationing intermediate-range ballistic missiles in Eastern Europe.
