Description:
This document reports on the first official visit by India’s newly elected prime minister, Morarji Desai of the Janata Party, to the Soviet Union. During talks with high-ranking Soviet officials, including the general secretary, Leonid Brezhnev, Desai confirms the intention of his government to hold on to the close relations with the Socialist countries. Both sides affirm the importance of their strong bilateral relations as well as larger support for détente and peaceful coexistence. The Indian prime minister describes the foreign policy agenda of his government at aiming at an improvement of relations with all South Asian neighbors, Pakistan included. While confirming his willingness to improve the relationship with Beijing, Desai complains about the occupation of Indian territory by China and its support for insurgencies.
Regarding its nuclear programme, Desai stands by the official Indian position that the programme is peaceful and that no weapons will be produced.
