Speech by the East German Head of State (Erich Honecker)

15 Jul 1988
Description: In this transcript of a speech by Erich Honecker at the 1988 Political Consultative Committee (PCC) meeting in Warsaw, the East German leader states that the threat of war and confrontation has diminished. He reviews the outcomes of the disarmament process and holds that the offensive forces of the Soviet Union and the US have to be reduced by 50 per cent. After commenting the situation in West Germany, he recommends more action in the non-military sphere, such as common research and development, and the creation of an integrated economic market.
