East German Assessment of NATO Forces

9 Feb 1972
Description: This is a statement by East German Minister of Defense Heinz Hoffmann on the state of NATO's and West Germany's armed forces. Hoffmann's statement was given during of the fourth session of the Warsaw Pact Committee of Defense Ministers in East Berlin 1972. He assesses that the West German military policy is fully in line with US strategy, that the Bundeswehr's capabilities are constantly being developed, and that West Germany makes important contributions to the Central European NATO forces, including through the service of high-ranking German staff officers in NATO's command structures. West Germany seeks to avoid nuclear warfare as long as possible. An attack by West Germany against East Germany could only occur with the consent of NATO and the US.
