Letter from the Polish Minister of Defense (Wojciech Jaruzelski) to the First Secretary of PZPR (Władysław Gomułka)

16 Dec 1970
Description: In this letter, the Polish Minister of Defence informs First Secretary Gomułka about the forthcoming Meeting of Warsaw Pact ministers of defence in Budapest. Jaruzelski describes the Polish positions on recent proposals for the strengthening of the defence capacities by the Supreme Commander of the UAF. While agreeing in principle to a further improvement of capabilities, the Defence Minister supports the politburo line that all future measures have to take the overall economic situation in Poland into account. Attached to the document is the original letter by the Supreme Commander of the UAF, Marshal Yakubovsky, asking for an improvement of forces, foremost the build-up of new communication systems.
