Scenario for the "Granit 86" Exercise

23 Dec 1985
Description: This document outlines the scenario for the Warsaw Pact's "Granit 86" exercise, which is aimed at creating a permanent air defense system both for peacetime and in war. Unlike many earlier exercises, the scenario for this maneuver assumed that no nuclear weapons would be used. General Anatoli Gribkov, the chief of staff of the Soviet armed forces and of the Warsaw Pact, remarks that the capabilities of new systems, such as helicopters that can destroy Warsaw Pact tanks with depleted uranium rounds, are becoming nearly as destructive as unconventional weapons.
