Speech by Indian Foreign Secretary (K.P.S. Menon)1949 |
||
Description:
Menon's speech, given to the Defence Staff College in Wellington, is an appraisal of geopolitics and India’s position as a netural and non-aligned country. Menon provides an overview of Indian foreign relations with both the Soviet and Western blocs since independence, mentioning critical diplomatic issues such as Kashmir, Operation Polo and Hyderabad. He also outlines the pros and cons of India joining either bloc. Reiterting India's belief in the UN, Menon concludes that while other countries may find Indian foreign policy non-conclusive, non-alignment is in fact a legitimate foreign policy approach, based on the principles of India’s founding.
