Speech by East German leader Erich Honecker at the Meeting of the Party and State Leaders of the States Participating in the Warsaw Treaty

5 Dec 1980
Description: This document is a transcript of a speech given by East German leader Erich Honecker at the meeting of the Warsaw Pact party leaders. Honecker expresses his concern about the situation in Poland. He refers to the establishment of strike committees in Gdansk and Sczeczin as a mistake. In Honecker's view, freeing political prisoners would undermine the position of the Polish Communist Party. He argues that NATO and the European Economic Community are backing the representatives of various groups emerging in Poland, including Solidarność.
