Report on the Proceedings of the Tashkent ConferenceFeb 1966 |
||
Description:
This Soviet report, translated from Russian, details the Soviet mediation efforts between India and Pakistan during the Tashkent Conference in January 1966. The declaration of Tashkent of 10 January 1966 formally brought to an end the Indo-Pakistani war of 1965. The report describes as the main obstacles against a settlement Pakistani insistence on a solution for the Kashmir question as well as Indian reluctance to withdraw from all of the territory conquered by its army. As a result of Soviet mediation, both parties agreed to withdraw all armed forces to positions held before 5 August 1965 and to the normalization of their diplomatic relations. The report also mentions Chinese attempts to disturb Soviet mediation efforts and to prevent a peaceful solution of the conflict. Collection: Indo-Soviet Relations
