Report on the Visit of the Indian Prime Minister (Lal Bahadur Shastri) to the USSR

27 May 1965
Description: The director for South Asian Affairs in the Soviet foreign ministry informs a GDR representative of the results of the visit by the Indian Prime Minister to the USSR in May 1965. Talks during the visit concentrated on the Vietnam War, questions of arms control and nuclear nonproliferation and the German Question. The Soviet side comments favorably on the continuation of Nehru's policies and India's progressive stance as a leading non-aligned country. Both sides favor an extension of their cooperation in the economic sphere. The USSR will provide further economic aid to India and will also support the construction of a steel plant. The Soviet rapporteur expresses concern at the recent deterioration of Sino-Indian and Indo-Pakistani relations.
