Declaration

24 May 1958
Description: This declaration, published after the May 1958 meeting of the Political Consultative Committee (PCC), focuses largely on the Warsaw Pact's perception of NATO's increase of armed forces, military expenditures, and especially the expanding production of nuclear weapons. The aim of the declaration is to persuade NATO to convene a conference on security issues and disarmament in which both NATO and the Warsaw Pact will take part. Among the main issues proposed for the agenda are the immediate cessation of nuclear tests, multilateral disarmament, and the creation of a nuclear-free zone in Central Europe. The Warsaw Pact expresses the desire to conclude a nonaggression treaty with NATO, but refuses to bring before the summit the question of German unity, claiming it is a matter that should be resolved internally by the German people.
