Note on a Conversation Between the GDR's Moscow Embassy and the Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs, South Asia Dept. 1962

10 Jan 1962
Description: This note highlights two topics discussed during a conversation between the GDR’s embassy in Moscow and Ivan Shpedko, deputy director of the South Asia bureau of the Soviet foreign ministry. Shpedko reports the increasing difficulties of the Indian Communist Party after it initially supported the Chinese position on the border conflict with India. At the same time, the Chinese are complaining about the official Soviet position of neutrality in the conflict. Shpedko also reports on Soviet policy towards the Indian occupation of the remaining Portuguese possessions on the subcontinent. The Indian leadership had informed the Soviet government in advance of its attack on Goa.
