This document describes events related to Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s visit to the USSR in 1982. Both sides once again confirm the excellent state of their relationship. Both sides affirm their interest in a reduction of international tensions. Both Moscow and Delhi confirm their interest in a demilitarization of the Indian Ocean region. Gandhi expresses Indian support for a political solution of the Afghanistan problem while at the same time identifying the infiltration of armed gangs as the main obstacle. Regarding China, Gandhi describes recent attempts for a rapprochement as unsuccessful due to the border question.
With respect to Indian domestic politics, the Soviet side refuse to get into talks about the relationship of the CPI with Gandhi’s Indian National Congress (I), claiming that the CPI is an independent actor.
