Creation and Combat Use of Air Assault and Marine Infantry Troops in the Allied Armies and Fleets (Summary)

1 Dec 1986
Description: This is the summary of a report on the introduction and combat use of air assault and marine infantry troops. Soviet Deputy Minister of Defense Evgeni Ivanovskii delivered this report during the 19th session of the Warsaw Pact's (WP) Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Warsaw in 1986. He discusses the importance of airborne and amphibious assault troops within NATO's concept of "Air-Land Battle". In the first part of his report, Ivanovskii reviews the characteristics and structure of air assault troops and suggests creating such capabilities within the WP. In the second part, he offers a similar analysis with respect to marine infantry troops. He suggests introducing these new branches first at batallion level, and later expanding them into full-fledged air assault and marine brigades, respectively.
