Description:
This is a collection of memoranda of conversations describing a number of meetings with Indian officials held during the visit of the East German Politburo member Hermann Axen to India in December 1985.
In his talk with Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the main topic is the escalating situation in South Asia. Gandhi describes the Sri Lankan policy towards the Tamil minority as genocide and warns of a possible military intervention. He also comments on recent reductions of tensions with Pakistan. Axen concentrates on the international scene and the SDI programme of the US.
There are also similar conversations with the Indian foreign minister, the vice president and one Cabinet member. In his conversation with the General Secretary of the National Council of the Communist Party of India, C. Ra. Rao, the latter expresses his party's general support for Rajiv Gandhi while at the same time criticizing his caution in some fields. Rao mentions attempts to heal the wounds of the division of the Indian Communist movement of 1964 through talks with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Collection: Indo-Soviet Relations
