Declaration by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Albanian People's Republic (Mehmet Shehu) at the Meeting of the Political Consultative Committee

27 Jan 1956
Description: This declaration by the Albanian chairman of the Council of Ministers, Mehmet Shehu, focuses on Albania's approval and support of the Soviet peace policy and initiatives while criticizing the US and NATO policies of rearmament, nuclear weapons proliferation, and attempts to remilitarize West Germany. The German question, Shehu argues, should be solved internally. Further, he supports the creation of an East German national army not only as a guardian of the country's sovereignty, but also as an important factor in maintaining peace and security in Europe. Shehu expresses support for the Soviet proposal that the People's Republic of China's be admitted to the UN. He characterizes regional development on the Balkans as positive.
