Principles for Improving the UAF by the Year 2000 while Maintaining Basic Defense Capabilities (Summary)

27 Nov 1989
Description: This is a summary of long-term planning for the Warsaw Pact's (WP) United Armed Forces (UAF) until the year 2000. The planning is introduced during the 24th meeting of the WP's Committee of Ministers of Defense (CMD) in Budapest in 1989. The tenets of future military planning are outlined based on the new defensive military doctrine and expected reductions of conventional forces. The overall aim is to maintain military parity with NATO and to fight off any possible aggression. The implications of this decision for the various branches of the military are elaborated.
