The Soviet Military's Attempts to End the Polish Crisis: East German Report on the Military Council Meeting in Sofia

Description: This East German report provides information on the 23rd meeting of the United Armed Forces (UAF) Military Council in Sofia. The agenda of the meeting covers, among other issues: i) NATO's enhanced combat-readiness and the implications for the UAF; and ii) the modernization of military equipment within the UAF. The situation in Poland is also discussed at the meeting. The first secretary of the Polish Communist Party, Stanislav Kania, and Polish Defense Minister Wojciech Jaruzelski ask the Warsaw Pact to set up a special command center at the Soviet base near Legnica.
