Memorandum of Meeting between the General Secretary of the BCP (Todor Zhivkov) and the General Secretary of the CPSU (Mikhail Gorbachev)

Description: This memorandum records a meeting between BCP General Secretary Todor Zhivkov and CPSU General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, held in June 1989 in Moscow. In accordance with the restructuring (perestroika) of the Socialist system, the conversation between the two heads of state deals with internal national developments in Bulgaria and the Soviet Union, bilateral relations, and relations among the Socialist countries as well as issues of global, European, and Balkan cooperation. Gorbachev draws attention to the reduction of the Soviet defense expenditure. Zhivkov puts emphasis on the Muslim minority in Bulgaria.
