The Soviet Union and the Origins of the Warsaw Pact, 1955

24 Jan 2003
Description: This analytical introduction by Vojtech Mastny examines the reasons for the establishment of the Warsaw Pact in 1955. The author presents a background description of the main events and issues in the international arena at the time, such as a project for the European Defense Community (EDC), promoted by the US with the goal of mobilizing West Germany's military potential for a possible confrontation with the Soviet Union, as well as West Germany's admission into NATO in May 1955. Mastny argues that both of these issues were major causes for the creation of the Warsaw Pact and offers a critique on a number of controversial questions. Was the creation of the Warsaw Pact a political rather than a military move of Soviet foreign policy under Nikita Khrushchev? How did it relate to the simultaneous struggle for power in the Kremlin? Did the formation of a rival alliance to NATO help ease the East-West confrontation, or did it rather have the opposite effect?
