Report on the Trip of the East German Foreign Minister (Otto Winzer) to India and Bangladesh

19 Jan 1972
Description: This report contains information on the visit of the GDR's Foreign Minister Otto Winzer to India and Bangladesh in January 1972. The main objective of the visit was the prompt establishment of diplomatic relations with Delhi. During the talks, Indian Prime Minister confirms the intention to recognize the GDR at the next opportunity and describes the delay as being caused by formalities. Indian Foreign Minister Singh mentions Western pressure on India and resulting difficulties in advancing recognition. At the same time, Winzer reports on strong West German pressure against recognition, amounting to the threat of cessation of relations. The East German delegation nonetheless expects recognition in the course of 1972.
