Speech by the Soviet Foreign Minister (Andrei A. Gromyko)

5 Dec 1979
Description: This is the transcript of a speech given by Andrei Gromyko at the 1979 meeting of the Warsaw Pact's Committee of Ministers of Foreign Affairs (CMFA) in Berlin. He admits the deterioration of the political situation in Europe, but sees no alternative to détente. He condemns US efforts to deploy intermediate-range nuclear weapons and regards them as an attempt to gain military dominance on the continent. He further assesses the state of international affairs, concentrating on the Israeli-Arab conflict, Iran, South Africa, and China.
