Description:
In another Beijing meeting between Ion Gheorghe Maurer and Zhou Enlai, the latter elaborates on the Chinese position with respect to the border question. According to Zhou, the present border had been imposed in 'unequal treaties' at the time of the Tsars. He denies Chinese ambitions for the return of the majority of these territories but insists on possession of the islands located on the Chinese side of the Amur river. Zhou accuses the Soviet Union as well as India of using the border questions as a pretext to maintain tensions in their relations to the People's Republic.
